Basic Equipment Guide - Pressure Buttons

Pressure buttons are devices that provide lateral support for the arrow and allow the arrow to flex as it accelerates past the riser. Basically they consist of a threaded cylinder with a plunger (usually PTFE) supported by a spring. The spring tensionn is adjustable, to aid tuning, and the position of the button relative to the riser (the centre-shot) is adjustable usually through a locking ring or location nut.

There are several manufacturers of butons and their prices range from around £7 to £60. As long as the buttons action is smooth and there is not roughness or dragging in the movement of the plunger it will work fine. The more expensive buttons are of a higher build quality and often have a vernier scale for pressure adjustment, making it easier to write doen settings for future reference.

Setting up a second button to match one that is already optimised is simple. Place the two buttons plunger to plunger and press them together. The plungers should retract at the same rate into the barrel of the button. Adjust the new button pressure until they match (clockwise stiffens the spring andticlockwise weakens the spring). Once the tension is set simple match the location collar position on the new button by placing them facing each other pluger to collar and adjusting the new collar until it touches the old one.
