Tatty Bogle

Definitely an event not to be missed..

What is it?

It is a tradition of Ivanhoe Archers to hold a clout shoot around the time of Hallowe’en. A clout shoot is where you shoot 3 arrows at 45 degrees into the air, hopefully landing in the scoring zone laid out on the ground. Your arrows must be stuck into the ground at an angle of not less than 60 degrees otherwise they are discounted. No sights, long rods, etc, are added to the bow (i.e. you are shooting”bare-bow”). Just to add a little flavour to the event. Ivanhoe’s tradition is to shoot this competition after dark, with a lighted pumpkin at the center of the scoring zone and a runway of candles in jars is laid out to roughly guide us to success.

We can only allow low poundage bows for this event ( 30 lbs or less) - compound bows cannot be accepted – but you are welcome to borrow a club bow. If your recurve is high poundage, then you must also look at borrowing a club bow, or chatting up other club members to borrow a lighter weight bow !!!!!

We will hold a practice clout shoot onone of the Sundays prior to the event for all club members….and it is recommended that you try this in daylight, as the Tatty Bogle is shot in the dark.

Please note – as always, Juniors must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

One of the most difficult / time consuming parts is the lighting of the candles – so if you have a super-duper-long-handled-spark-ignition-BBQ-lighter, you are most welcome!

Where is it?

On our usual field at the back of the college.

When is it?

Usually the last Saturday night in October/Closest to Halloween

What do I bring?

  • Bow (bare, of course! – sorry, no compound bows allowed – you’ll have to use a club bow if you’re stuck! )
  • A finger tab is allowed, and might make your life more comfortable…
Arrows (identifiable……..with spares in case you lose any…..if you’ve got more than one set, bring your least favourite set)
  • Some people like to attach glowing bits to their arrows, so they can see ‘em fly in the night sky …..and to see ‘em sticking out of the ground….check out the fishing shops for glow-in-the-dark gizmoes.
  • Good weatherproof clothing – ‘cos we don’t cancel just because of a bit of a cold snap, or a drop of rain or a blizzard, or anyfink……
  • A good torch…..we have to go ‘n search for our arrows!!!!!
  • A jam jar (or similar) with 1 tea-light candle (or more) + a means of lighting it!
  • Your food for the BBQ –yes, we do find time to eat and socialize….so your family and friends are very welcome to join us.(don’t forget the drinks!!!!)
  • Anything else you can think of to make the evening fun ( please note – this is just about the ONLY occasion when we don’t hold a raffle …..and there’s no target fee, either…!!!!)
  • Guests welcome, as long as they’re self-sufficient, friendly, non-hostile, house-trained ( that’s more than we can manage!), and willing to help out here and there if necessary ( such as helping with scoring, dishing up sausages, etc….!!!) sorry, non-club members will not be allowed to shoot.
  • Umbrellas…?????? No, I’m not pessimistic!!!!!

Flaming Arrow Challenge

We challenge the more daring archers to shoot a flaming arrow which will remain alight as it hits the ground. Robin Hood managed it, so you might, too. Please note, -all your practicing must be done at home in advance, as you only get ONE CHANCE on the night!!!!!
